9th Grade Projects
Public Service Announcement for DVIA
Math/Computer Science
Business Identity- Our first project for computer science was a project on business' identities and their mission statements. In our project we had to pick a business, find its mission statement, give our opinion on how the business should be portrayed on social media, show how the business is portrayed on social media, and lastly show how the company could fix their identity to match better to their mission statement.
Tedx Graph- For our Tedx (or DVCx) event we had to create a Ted talk, which is a talk that is supposed be a persuasive talk on something you are passionate about. For our Ted talks we had to create one or more graphs that persuade the audience to think what you want them to think. This relates to Computer Science because we had to create this on google sheets which is an online computer program. |
Twine- In our computer science class we had to create an online Twine game as an extension as our myth stories. The Twine is a choose your own adventure game (CYOA) which is supposed to be linked back to or related around the story of our myth. The CYOA is type of game where people choose their own fate based of the game and their choices. Twine is an online program that helps you create these games.
Scratch- For Computer Science class we had to create and code a game based upon our District and our Districts' culture. In my game I have a worker boy from District 11 that has to collect falling crops which all workers of their district must and then also avoid the moving Peacekeeper. In the book District 11 is a district constantly harassed by Peacekeepers and always having to collect crops which is what my game resembles.
App Inventor R and J Quiz- For our Romeo and Juliet project in Computer Science we had the task of making an app on a special Android program called App Inventor. Each App Inventor app had to resemble at least 1 scene from Romeo and Juliet the book. My app was a quiz game testing your overall knowledge of the book Romeo and Juliet. My quiz has questions from 5 separate sections of the book which test your memory of certain scenes and acts in which the events take place. My quiz was a multiple choice quiz. App Inventor uses block coding for all the app to function and the app can be completely designed by you. |
Physics/Engineering
Light Box- Our first project for Physics and Engineering was our Light Box building and presentation. For our Light box we had to build a box and then paste, draw, or paint pictures and things on the outside of our box to represent us as a person. Also we had to place mirrors on the inside to reflect an image on the inside that's supposed to represent what we are on the inside. After building the inside and outside of our box we had to make a presentation for our whole project and present our light box.
Tedx Physics projects- For the Tedx event we also had to create small physics projects explaining a topic in Physics like, gravity, Newtons laws, and tension. After being assigned the topic our goal was to create a fun and innovative way to explain this topic. Part of the process was to create a list of materials needed for building and to build the project. In order to be fully prepared for the event we had to write scripts for our presentation of them.

Puzzle Cube- In Engineering we were assigned a Puzzle Cube project, which is where you used 5 sets of different color cubes to create a cube. Seems simple enough but we were thrown a curveball which was our restrictions. The restrictions were that we had to use 5 different pieces (hence the 5 colors) and only 1 piece could be flat and all pieces had to be 4 blocks to 6 blocks. After creating the block we had to use a program called autodesk to create a digital version of each piece, an engineering drawing of all pieces, and assemble it all on the program.
Wind Turbine- For physics we were challenge to create a working wind turbine. We chose our own groups and began the engineering design process. We had to research on actual wind turbines an dhow they work. We had to find out how the generator worked and how to produce energy in the turbine. We also researched on the turbine blades and how to make them as best as possible to catch more wind and produce more possible energy. In the end we had to also create a power point presentation to show and present our EDP (engineering design process)
District Model- For our Physics class we had to create a model of the district we were assigned. The district model had to include at least 4 buildings that would be in the actual district if it were real. We needed to not only build these buildings and accessories to the buildings from scratch but we also had to create circuits for all the buildings.
Headphones- In physics we were learning about magnets, electromagnetism, and waves, so we were given the challenge of making a pair of working headphones. Our teacher provided the magnets and wire but we personally had to craft the actual speaker and audio jack and make it function properly. The other standard was we had to make the outside creative and unique so it represented what we want to be or where we want to be in the future. We had to use materials that we found and wanted to use to craft our headphones so many headphones were crafted from various materials. My headphones in specific were made from wood and laser cut to give it the proper shape. I believe my headphones were creative, new, and very high quality. |
English/Communications
|
Watermark- Our first project for English and Communications was our watermark writing and presentation. For our watermark we had to write a story about an event that had a life lasting (watermark) impression on us. After writing the story and including word painting tools we had to present our story in front of our class and some in front of the community at The Moth.
Ted Talks- In our Ted event we had our physics projects, but we also had some people do Ted Talks. Everyone had to make a Ted Talk but only some had to present. In our Ted Talks we had to speak on something important to us and basically persuade the audience to feel the same as we do/did. In this project we relied both on English and Communications. English for the writing of the Talk and Communications for the presenting of the actual Talk. Books- For our English class we had to write our own books with Greek gods as the main characters. Each book had to be based around an event that has happened in the past 20 years. My book starred Poseidon and Demeter as our main gods and it took place in Japan. The event that took place was the tsunami in Japan in 2011. The book also had to be a children's story so it couldn't be to graphic and also had to be relate able to kids. Finally our books had to have morals and reasoning to be read for kids. Speech for Districts- For each District we had to write a speech that told and resembled how the real District would have felt on the Capitol. Your district could either be pro Capitol or pro Rebellion depending on how they felt. My district (District 11) decided to be pro Rebellion and we wrote on the flaws of the Capitol and how we need to Rebel against them. We used facts from the books and movies to help prove our points. The speech is to be taken as if we are really there or were really there. For our speeches we also had to make costumes completely out of paper. The costumes also had to represent something that might actually come out of our district, something the people of there would wear.
Audio Skits- For English we were required to write and record 2 separate skits for two separate purposes. The first skit was a skit written between a parent and child where the two argue over a new relationship. This gave us practice on writing scripts and recording and editing as well. Our second script was a Podcast written to answer one of four questions offered. Each podcast was supposed to be a conversational script written to sound like you were speaking to the audience. My podcast answers the question, "Are humans powerless to make the world an enjoyable place?"
